Hagersville Tire Fire

Feburary 12, 1990

 

There were 14 million tires in Hagersville, Ontario. They were owned by Tyre King, Ed Straza, who wanted to recycle them. However, a fire was started by five Ohsweken-area teens. The fire began at around 1 a.m and soon enough all the tires were engulfed in flames. The fire burned for 17 days and cost more than $15 million for repair. There were at least 250 firefighters who arrived the scene.

The Oka Crisis

July 11, 1990

 

It all started when a violent argument was triggered by a golf course  and a native burial tradition. It began in a small town of Quebec. A conflict then started between the natives and the Canadian army. The crisis drew worldwide attention. It took 78-days until the Mohawk warriors surrendered unexpectedly catching the Canadian army by surprise. There were 34 people arrested. There were no shots fired.

Sue, The T-rex

August 12, 1990

 

One of the largest and well-preserved Tyrannosaurus Rex was found in South Dakota, United States by Sue Hendrickson. Sue was about 90% complete and was measured to be about 13 ft. tall and 40 ft. long. It took about 17 days to uncover Sue. The famous dinosaur is now preserved and assembled in Chicago’s Field Museum.

Earthquake wreaks the Philippines
July 16, 1990

 

A strong 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck the largest island of the Philippines. More than 1,000 people died. The massive quake caused damages across most parts of the Luzon Island. It struck at 4:26 p.m. The quake went on for a full minute making building collapsed which caused most of the deaths and a lot of injuries. Every building in Baguio City, also known as the Philippines’ Summer Capital, suffered great damages.
